birthday abduction

last friday i was unexpectedly woken up at 5:30am, rushed to the car and taken to the airport with absolutely no idea what was happening!! hours later i’m in the san francisco airport waiting for a connecting flight to los angeles and puzzling over some clues emily gave me in the form of letters on sticky notes. the best guess i could come up with was the arrangement ‘fartan’. another flight and 40 minutes of driving later and i’m still unsuccessfully arranging the now 15 letters TARFAYKONCMSTSR as we pass a knotts scary farm sign… OMG!! KNOTTS SCARY FARM!!

we spent friday relaxing, playing warhammer online, eating fuddruckers, and chatting excitedly about all the crazy stuff we’d see at the haunt. saturday morning we grabbed a light breakfast at denny’s then walked to knotts berry farm to spend the day riding roller coasters and oohing and ahhhing over all the wicked halloween decorations. my favorite coaster there was the silver bullet which had me closing my eyes and screaming like a little girl the whole time!!

after a quick trip back to the hotel for naps, showers, and foods it was time for the haunt! until 2am we explored a dozen haunted mazes, rode more roller coasters, dodged frightening monsters and ate candy. it was awesome!! by the end we were soooo exhausted we were simply yawning as maniacs jumped out at us with chainsaws. after the haunt we had just two hours of sleep then back on an airplane to seattle.

what an insane birthday! thanks emily :)

okay nvscene 2008 was awesome! i’m almost fully recovered now from the many sleepless nights in san jose during the party. :) in the end the demo ryiinn, kirill, trace and i made tied asd’s demo for 3rd place in the compo. not too shabby. :)

here’s a video capture you can watch from demoscene.tv!

you can also download the full demo and rate it here: n-0505

i’ve posted a bunch of photos from the trip to my nvision 2008 photoset on flickr.

it’s the last day of nvscene - a demo party hosted by nvidia as part of their nvision event. it’s been awesome! ryiinn and i got down here to san jose on saturday and immediately dived into nonstop work on the demo to get it finished. saturday and sunday were pretty much nothing but caffeine + junk food + demo demo demo. sunday night was cool as we met up with sceners in the nvscene hall before it opened and went out for a proper dinner. it was a lot of fun speculating on what productions would be released at the party.

monday was the start of nvision and the nvscene demo party and ryiinn and i were still very busy trying to finish our demo. we only got a couple hours of sleep and got up early to attend the seminar by iq of rgba. it was amazing and super inspiring. i’ve chatted with iq a lot on messenger so it was very cool to see his presentation and talk to him afterwards. he also hooked me up with a free copy of the escena.org demo dvd which features a bunch of demos i worked on. thanks iq! i wanted to make it to preacher’s seminar but woke up too late. :(

monday night we stayed up the entire night finishing the demo and by the morning had it to a point we were pretty happy with and headed down to the hall to attend the seminars. there was a talk on 4ks by mentor then a super rad talk by chaos of farbrausch who went into lots of interesting details on the making of everything from fr-08 and kkrieger to debris. it was especially very cool to hear about his comments on the design of the werkkzeug stacking system. finally there was a cool presentation by navis though it was quite similar to his presentation from breakpoint.

at night on tuesday the 4ks and demos were shown on the crazy big screen and amazing sound system. the 4k compo was absolutely INSANE. there were soooo many good productions. my favorite was texas - it was mindblowing and loooked soooo good on the big screen. the demo compo started off a little weak in comparison to the amazing 4ks but picked up at the end. the northern dragons demo was very cool to see since i had seen some work in progress on it from guybrush and was looking forward to seeing all the cool escher inspired scenes and effects. ryiinn and i were super nervous about how the demo we presented would look on the bigscreen and be received by the audience. when it came on though i felt a lot better and had fun watching it on the big screen. it was especially cool when the sequence of blobs subdividing at an exponential rate got applause. :) i had super high expectations for the asd demo and have to admit i was a bit disappointed as it was very much like metamorphosis (of course being a sequel) and i kept waiting for it to break out of its 2d panning. my favorite demo of the compo was stargazer which was just gorgeous! after the compos we went out for dinner with other sceners and then to rvscene where i had a lot of fun chatting with trixter, chaos, and preacher.

right now ryiinn and i are in the hall watching bonzaj of plastic talk about linger in the shadows and trolling pouet as we wait for the award ceremony. more reportage and photos to come, stay tuned! ;)

One week to go!

There’s now just one week until the soft deadline for nvision. We’re in supreme bust-it mode. This weekend, we worked until 5 am on Friday, worked until 3 am on Saturday, and then went into the studio on Sunday and sat with Kirill for over 11 hours straight (no lie) cranking out stuff.

Jim got an email today reminding people of the deadlines. The problem is, they wrote that the soft cap was on Friday and the hard deadline was Saturday. My day was a supreme pile of deuce and I’m strung out and tired as it is, so that almost sent my last few marbles flying. Luckily, he got a follow-up email (sent five minutes after) saying that the dates were wrong and that it was, in fact, Monday and Tuesday for the respective deadlines.

Thank god.

I’m taking a texturing break to blog this while Jim’s baking out stuff for one of Kirill’s scenes. I see that the bg on the site’s tiling wrong on my monster display, so I should fix that. I think that once this demo is out the door, I’m going to take at least a week break from even looking at the photoshop icon.

Anyways, progress = win, and we’re both looking forward to getting out to San Jose and submitting our very first joint prod! (Aww, couples demo. How cute.) I just hope that we’re rested enough to have a rocking good time. I want to at least get SOME gaming in and I’m really looking forward to some of the talks (especially hearing what Navis has to say in his).

I guess I can save the burn-out for PAX (I’m working in our booth the day we fly back from the party…oof). Gonna have to suck it up and drink coffee like a true Seattle-ite I guess :)

Almost there

It seems like this theme is pretty much done. I have some sloppy code I need to clean up eventually, but at least everything functions. BP and I are still duking it out over letter case. You see, he hates using capital letters. Not because he’s bad at writing, but simply because he thinks they’re extraneous. I, on the other hand, like caps (in paragraphs, at least).

I’ve killed caps in links and other places, but I just can’t being myself to axe them all over *sniffles*

On a demo-related note, the Nvision demo is coming along quite nicely. I can’t wait for the weekend so I can stay up all night helping blackpawn with textures and random art bits.

Between Nvision, the Radiohead show we’re going to, and presenting at PAX 2008, August is a ridiculously busy month. Oof.
